Born in England/Ireland.  Died ; interred Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Deserted the British Navy during the War of 1812 and moved to Rutland Township.  Settled in Pinckney Township, Lewis County, New York.  Purchased 20.52 acres of land there from William N. Denning on 25 May 1839.

Born 11 April 1799 in Saratoga County, New York; daughter of Joseph and Eunice (Giddings) Jeffers.  Died .  Married (1st) John Riordan.  Married (2nd), as his 2nd wife, Obed Shepard of Denmark Township, Lewis County, New York.  Obed had married (1st) Mary (?) and had several children.

 

1850 US Census: Obed Shepard, age 64 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Denmark Township, Lewis County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $2,000.  The household also included Mary Shepard, age 65 (b. CT); Martin Shepard, age 27 (b. NYS); Polly Shepard, age 19 (b. NYS); Milo Shepard, age 24 (b. NYS); Harriett Shepard, age 19 (b. NYS); George Shepard, age 22 (b. NYS); Eliza Shepard, age 19 (b. NYS); and Sarah Shepard, age 1 (b. NYS).

 

1855 NYS Census: Obed Shepard, age 69 (b. MA) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Denmark Township, Lewis County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Eunice Shepard (b. Saratoga Co., NY), age 56.  Of interest, his next door neighbors were the households headed by Martin Shepard, age 30 (b. Lewis Co., NY), who was employed as a farmer, and John Shepard, age 37 (b. Lewis Co., NY), who was employed as a farmer.

 

1860 US Census: Eunice Shephard, age 61 (b. NYS), resided with her son, Thomas B. Riordan, age 35 (b. NYS) in Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York.

Born August 1825 in New York.  Died 22/24 February 1905, age 79 years 6 months; interred East Rodman Cemetery, Rodman Township, Jefferson County, New York (also known as Whitesville Cemetery).  Purchased his father's 20.52 acre farm from the other heirs, later selling it for $400 to John S. Campbell on 9 March 1857.

 

1850 US Census: No record found in Lewis or Jefferson Counties, New York.

 

1855 NYS Census: No record found.

 

1860 US Census: Thomas B. Riordan, age 35 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York.  His real estate was valued at $1,000 and his personal property was valued at $450.  The household also included his wife, Mercy Riordan, age 28 (b. NYS); son, James H. Riordan, age 8 (b. NYS); and Eunice Shephard, age 61 (b. NYS) [his mother].

 

1865 NYS Census: Baldwin Rierdon, age 39 (b. Lewis Co., NY) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had been married once.  The household also included his wife, Fidelia M. Rierdon, age 34 (b. Rensselaer Co., NY), who had had 2 children; son, John H. Rierdon, age 13 (b. Lewis Co., NY); son, Herbert E. Rierdon, age 3 years and 6 months (b. Jefferson Co., NY); and servant, Harriet J. Jones, age 20 (b. Lewis Co., NY) [sister of Baldwin's 2nd wife].

 

1870 US Census: Baldwin Riordan, age 44 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  No real estate value given.  His personal property was valued at $700.  The household also included his wife, Fidelia A. Riordan, age 39 (b. NYS); son, John H. Riordan, age 18 (b. NYS) and "at home;" son, Herbert Riordan, age 8 (b. NYS); son, Oris Riordan, age 4 (b. NYS); and son, Charles Riordan, age 2 (b. NYS).

 

1875 NYS Census: Baldwin, Riodan, age 50 (b. Lewis Co., NY) and employed as a day laborer, was heading a household in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Mercy Riodan, age 50 (b. Lewis Co., NY); son, Herbert Riodan, age 13 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); son, Orris Riodan, age 11 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); son, Charles Riodan, age 9 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); and daughter-in-law, Alida Riodan, age 20 (b. Lewis Co., NY) [John's wife, who].

1900 US Census: Baldwin Riordan, age 74 (b. Aug 1825 in NYS; father b. England; mother b. NYS) and single, resided in the household headed by John Riordan, age 49 (b. Aug 1850), married 28 years, and employed as a farmer, in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included John's wife of 28 years, Lydia Riordan, age 45 (b. NYS); son, Amos Jones, age 22 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer; daughter, Mercy Jones, age 20 (b. NYS); daughter, Esther Jones, age 17 (b. NYS); son, James Jones, age 11 (b. CT) and employed as a general merchant, was heading a household in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had been married 11 years.  The household also included his wife, Eva E. Riordan, age 32 (b. Jul 1868 in NYS; father b. CT; mother b. England), who had had 1 child, still alive; son, Grant B. Riordan, age 8 (b. Sep 1891 in NYS); and mother-in-law, Elizabeth Beecher, age 77 (b. Aug 1822 in England; parents b. England) and widowed, who had had 4 children, 2 of whom were still alive, and .

NYS), widowed, and employed as a farmer, was heading a household on Cross Road in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had been married 18 years.  The household also included his housekeeper, Emma Hart, age 37 (b. NYS), widowed, and mother of 2 children, both still alive; and son, Grant B. Riordan, age 18 (b. NYS); single, and employed as a farm laborer on the home farm

NYS) and employed as a dairy farmer, was heading a household on Churchill Road in Rutland Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He married 1st at age 23.  The household also included his wife, Irene L. Riordan, age 33 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who married 1st at age 18.

 

Grant B. Riordan married Irene L. (?) (b. abt 1897 in NY (also seen: b. 1902), d. 1975; interred with Grant).

 

Charles J. Riordan married (2nd) widow Emma Idell (Jackson) Hart (b. 1870, d. 1961; interred with Charles), daughter of Gursham Tilley and Cornelia (?) Jackson, who was his housekeeper in 1910, on 17 September 1913.

1875 NYS Census: John Rierdan, age 23 (b. Lewis Co., NY) and employed as a farm laborer, resided in the household headed by Nelson Shepherd, age 28 (b. Lewis Co., NY) and employed as a farmer, in Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included John's wife, Lida Rierdan, age 21 (b. Arthur and Dorothy (Riordan) Strail were divorced before their daughter, Agnes was born.  Dorothy married (2nd) Fred Kern in 1947, who adopted Dorothy's daughter under the name Sandra Kern.  Fred and Dorothy (Riordan) Kern had the following children:

Note: Always referred to as "Fred."  However, in 1940, when, as usual, he was referred to as Fred, his 3rd son was referred to as "Frederick Eugene Riordan, Jr.," suggesting Fred might be a nickname.

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born 29 July 1878 in Rodman Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 24 April 1969 at Watertown, Jefferson County, New York; interred Parish Road Cemetery, Noseville, Pamelia Township, Jefferson County.  Resided initially with his parents.  After marriage resided with Lizzie and was employed as a farmer on the Zimmer homestead near Evans Mills, Jefferson County, New York.  In 1915 purchased the Herman Walts farm in LeRay Township.  Sold that farm to their youngest son, Arthur, in 1957 and moved to a farm owned by their son, Robert, on Parish Road, Parish, New York.

 

1900 US Census: Fred Riordan, age 21, resided with his parents in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

1905 NYS Census: Fred Riordan, age 26 (b. US), was heading a household in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Lizzie Riordan, age 21 (b. US); and son, William Riordan, age 1 (b. US).

 

1920 US Census: Fred Riordan, age 41 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a dairy farmer, was heading a household on Perch Lake Road in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife, Lizzie Riordan, age 35 (NYS; father b. NYS; mother b. Germany); son, William Riordan, age 15 (b. NYS) and single; daughter, Elma Riordan, age 13 (b. NYS); daughter, Bertha Riordan, age 10 (b. NYS); son, Robert Riordan, age 7 (b. NYS); son, Freddie Riordan, age 4 (b. NYS); and son, Harlow Riordan, age 1 (b. NYS).

 

1925 NYS Census: Fred E. Riordan, age 46 (b. US), was heading a household in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York. (pg 11)

 

1930 US Census: Fred Riordan, age 51 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS) and employed as a dairy farmer, was heading a household on Perch Lake Road in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He married 1st at age 24.  The household also included his wife, Lizzie Riordan, age 45 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), who married 1st at age 18; daughter, Bertha Riordan, age 21 (b. NYS), single, and employed as a public school teacher; daughter, Alma Riordan, age 23 (b. NYS), single, and employed as a stenographer for a seed house; son, Robert Riordan, age 17 (b. NYS), single, and employed as a dairy farm laborer; son, Fred Riordan, age 14 (b. NYS); son, Harlow Riordan, age 11 (b. NYS); and son, Arthur Riordan, age 9 (b. NYS).

 

1940 US Census: Fred Riordan, age 61 (b. NYS) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household on Evans Mills Route 1 in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had completed 8th grade and resided in the same house in April 1935.  The household also included his wife, Elizabeth Riordan, age 56 (b. NYS); son, Frederick Riordan, Jr., age 24 (b. NYS), single, and employed as a laborer in a milk factory, who had completed 8th grade; son, Harlow Riordan, age 21 (b. NYS), single, and employed as a book keeper for a farm machinery business, who had completed 4 years of high school; son, Arthur Riordan, age 19 (b. NYS) and single, who had completed 3 years of high school and had no occupation recorded; and boarder, Lester Granjean, age 20 (b. NYS), single, and employed as a farm laborer, who had completed 2 years of high school.

"Lizzie"

 

Born 16 April 1884 on the Zimmer homestead farm in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York; daughter of George J. and Catherine "Kate" (Spath) Zimmer.  Lizzie died 28 April 1970, age 86, at Mercy Hospital, Watertown, Jefferson County; interred Parish Road Cemetery, Pamelia Township (almost no grey hair).  Attended Pamelia Township schools.  Married Fred Eugene Riordan on 11 March 1903 at the Evans Mills Methodist Church, with Reverend W. S. Tisdale officiating.

b. Alma "Irma" Kathryn Riordan: (photos) Born 22 August 1906 in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 24 May 1990 at Watertown, Jefferson County; interred Parish Road Cemetery, Pamelia Township, Jefferson County.  Married Royal L. Collins (b. 1909, d. 1984; interred with Alma) on 16 October 1937 and resided at RD #1, Watertown, New York.  Royal researched and documented the Riordan family history.  Alma and Royal had the following son:

 

(1. James Arthur Collins: Born 1946 at Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.

 

c. Bertha "Birdie"/"Aunt Bee" Lucy Riordan: (photos) (more info) Born 13 March 1909/10 in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 22 April 1966 in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County; interred 25 April in North Watertown Cemetery, Watertown, Jefferson County.  In 1970 resided in the Ryan Nursing Home, Watertown.  Married Karl Eugene Dixon (photos) (more info) (b. 1911, 1979; interred with Bertha), who was employed as Principal of the Evans Mills Elementary School, on 2 December 1932 and resided at Evans Mills, Jefferson County, New York.  No children.

 

d. Robert "Bob" Fred Riordan: (photos)(more info) Born 16 May 1912 in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 16 August 2007, age 95, in Pamelia Township; interred there in the Parish Road Cemetery.

 

1940 US Census: Robert F. Riordan, age 27 (b. NYS) and employed as a condenser operator in a milk plant, was heading a household in the Village of Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  He had completed 3 years of high school and resided in the same place in April 1935.   The household also included his wife, Elizabeth Riordan, age 25 (b. NJ), who had completed 3 years of college; and son, Robert F. Riordan, age 1 (b. NYS).

 

Robert Fred Riordan married Elizabeth "Betty" Harriet Curtis (photos) (b. 1914, d. 29 Mar 2008), daughter of Henry and Matilda (?) Curtis), on 27 March 1937 in the Methodist-Protestant Church parsonage, Stone Mills, New York and resided at Pamelia, Jefferson County, New York.  Elizabeth graduated from the Potsdam Normal School in 1936 and taught 5th grade in local schools until 1974.

 

Initially after marriage Robert and Elizabeth resided at Antwerp, where Robert worked for the Borden Milk Products Company.  Later they moved to Evans Mills, where Robert continued to work for Borden, eventually becoming Plant Superintendant.  In 1959 Robert and his family moved to Syracuse, where Robert was employed as Plant Manager of the Borden Research Center, retiring there in 1974.  Robert and Elizabeth also owned a farm on Parish Road, Parish, New York, where his parents lived in their latter years.  In 2000 they resided at RD #4, Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.

 

Robert and Elizabeth (Curtis) Riordan had the following children:

 

(1. Robert Fred Riordan, Jr.: (photos) Born 1 March 1939.  Resided with his parents.  Grave stone Parish Road Cemetery, Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

(2. Carolyn/Caroline Ann Riordan: (photos) Born 1941.  Married (1st) Roger William Taylor (photos) (of interest, was "Best Man" for John William Riordan in 1958) in 1959 in the First Methodist Church, Evans Mills, Jefferson County, New York and resided in New York.  Carolyn and Roger had the following children:

 

(a. Cheryl Lynn Taylor: Born 1959.

 

(b. Sandra Leigh Taylor: Born 1961.

 

(c. Deborah "Debbie" Taylor: Born .

 

Carolyn (Riordan) Taylor married (2nd) Charles Covell.

 

(3. David Curtis Riordan: (photos) Born 1946.  Married Karen A. (?), and in 1997 resided in New York.  David and Karen had the following son:

 

(a. Paul Riordan: Married Marissa Zeyr and had the following son:

 

(1) Jonathan Paul Riordan: Born 2014.

 

e. Fred "Chuck"/"Freddie" Eugene Riordan, Jr.: (photos) (more info) Born 30 May 1915 at home on the family farm, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died Tuesday, 30 December 1952, age 37, in a Syracuse hospital; funeral Philadelphia, Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County; interred Oakwood Cemetery, Theresa Township, Jefferson County.  Resided in Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County.  Married, as her 1st husband, Vera Wagoner (photos) (Para 3.a.(1. of gen 3 of the Wagoner Annex), on 20 October 1943; no children.

 

f. Harlow "Hap" Clifton Riordan: (photos) Born 27/28 August 1918 at home on the family farm, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 27 September 2009, age 91; interred New Evans Mills Cemetery, Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Veteran of World War II; enlisted 18 February 1942 at Fort Niagara, near Youngstown, Porter Township, Niagara County, New York.  Employed as a postal worker.  Resided on Massey Street, Watertown, Jefferson County.  Married Elizabeth 'Betty' Edna West (d. 2009), daughter of Garrett and Veronica West (d. 17 May 1964 at the home of a relative near Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence Co., N.Y. from a coronary occlusion), of Evans Mills on 20 October 1942 (same day, but different years as Ray and Mary (Drake) Dougall, so they frequently celebrated their wedding anniversaries together).  Harlow and Elizabeth had the following children:

 

(1. Stephen "Steve" Bruce Riordan: (photos) Born 1948.

 

(2. Stuart Harlow Riordan: (photos) Born 19 March 1950.  Died age 49 from complications of a heart attack.  Married Kathleen (?) and had the following children:

g. Arthur "Joe" Irving Riordan: (photos)(more info) Born 27 February 1921 at home on the family farm, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died Saturday, 15 April 2000; interred Parish Road Cemetery, Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Graduated from Evans Mills High School in 1940.  Purchased in 1957 and subsequently operated his parents’ farm in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York; resided on one side of the house with his family, while his parents resided on the other side.  Married Luella/Louella G. Fleming (photos) (b. 16 Sep 1928) on 18 May 1948 at the First Methodist Church, Evans Mills (divorced 1985).  In 2013 Louella resided on Kaiser Road, Evans Mills.  Arthur and Louella had the following children: (order uncertain)

 

(1. Ronald "Ron"/"Ronnie" Charles Riordan: (photos) Born 1950 at Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.  Resided in New York.  Employed in a bank in Watertown.

 

(2. Neil "Ned" Arthur Riordan: (photos) Born 1953 at Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.  Married Christina K. (?) and resided in New York.

 

3   William "Bill" Henry Riordan:

 

Born 5 February 1904 in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 25 June 1956 at Watertown, Jefferson County; interred New Evans Mills/Maple Grove Cemetery, Jefferson County, New York.  Married Bessie Irene Walts, paragraph 4.c.(3.(a.(1)(a) of generation 3 of the Briant Annex on 1 August 1931.

1930 US Census: William Riordan, age 27 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS), single, and employed as a laborer on a dairy farm, resided in the household headed by Carleton Beebee, age 38 (b. NYS) and employed as a dairy farmer, on Pamelia Road, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included Carlton's wife, Ira Beebee, age 38; son, William Robert Beebee, age 15; daughter, Hazel Virginia Beebee, age 14; daughter, Lucille Beebee, age 8; daughter, Ann Elizabeth Beebee, age 6; and mother, Lucy Beebee, age 68.
