Origin of
the surname “Rowell:” (per The Media Research Bureau, Washington, D.C.)
"The name of Rowell is believed by some authorities
to be of ancient Anglo-Saxon origin and derived from the hamlet of that name in
Gloucestershire, England. Others, however,
state that it was taken from the residence of its first bearers of Rouelles in
France, and was brought into England by a Huguenot family of the name in the
early seventeenth century. Still other
family historians assert that it was a variant of the baptismal name Rowle or
Rowles, but this last seems most improbable.
The name is found on ancient records in the various spellings of
Rowelle, Rowel, Roule, Rowle, Rowles, Rolle, Rouelle, Rouell, and Rowell, of
which the last is the form most generally used in America today.
Families of this name were to be found at early dates in
the English counties of Gloucester, Devon, Somerset, Bedford, Oxford, and
London. They were, for the most part, of
the landed gentry and yeomanry of Great Britain."

Recollections of the grandsons of Truman Rowell,
generation 5, above:
a. During a rain storm, just before he died, Truman took his grandson, Truman
Smith Rowell, Jr., in a horse-drawn wagon to the marble quarry at Gouverneur,
St. Lawrence County, New York, where he purchased a piece of marble to serve as
his 1st wife’s gravestone.
When they returned Truman engraved the following verse on it: “Blessed
are the dead, which died in the Lord from hence forth, in with the Spirit, that
they may rest from their wrong, and their work do not follow them. Hence from the fourth a Holy mind, may she
attend his cry. If tiring men come rich
the ground there you Lordly lie. Since
tis day must be your did in spite of all your towers. The tall, the wise, the Reverent lead, shall
lie as low as ours.”
b. Theresa, N.Y. (30 Nov 1939): the story of the Pioneer Sawmill of
Truman Rowell:
“In pioneer days there was a busy saw mill on the outlet of Crystal
Lake, built there by one of the early settlers of that section, Truman Rowell,
who saw possibilities in such a Venture in a new land. He knew the region was
surrounded by a wilderness of good timber and that settlers would want to make
use of that timber in house and barn building.
He was sure that the water supply for his mill was sufficient.
“Residing in the main street of Plessis today are two brothers, Eugene
Rowell, 80 next April, and Arthur, next door, 78 next May. Both recall their Grandfather, Truman Rowell,
the mill owner, but do not recall the mill, which was forsaken before their
memory. Today Eugene Rowell told that
his grandfather was one of the very early settlers there in the Crystal Lake
region. Crystal Lake is fed by springs,
and the outlet tumbles down through a gorge to become lost in a swampy tract of
land before it empties into Mud Lake at the doorway of Redwood.
“The Rowell mill [was] a rushing business. Settlers filled its mill yard with logs, very
favorable location, however. But the
waters of Mud Lake have a fall of almost 100 feet in empting into Butterfield
Lake and enterprising pioneers made use of that location for a mill, which gave
a greater power with its greater fall and more abundant water supply. This cut off the business of the Rowell
mill. Besides, the Crystal Lake water
supply began to dwindle.
“So, over three-quarters of a century ago Truman Rowell left the mill
and purchased what is known as the “Island” in Clear and Mud Lake, several
hundred acres, and began farming. There
is still to be seen, after nearly a century, parts of the wall for this early
dam. Today there is a gate in the outlet
of Crystal Lake so that the Redwood mills can conserve a water supply, and when
conditions call for more water, open the gate to help with the water supply.
“I remember,” said Mr. Eugene Rowell today, “when my grandfather lived
on the Clear Lake Island, but not the ays of the saw mill. When I was a boy I used to sometimes play
where the mill stood and some of the machinery was there 75 years ago.
“Today Crystal Lake is a summer resort noted for its bathing beach
where thousands come in the hot weather.
Few people, even those who reside there, dream that there was ever a
busy mill right at the outlet. Arthur
Rowell recalls that his grandfather, Truman Rowell, served in the War of 1812,
also that his son named Truman Smith Rowell, Sr., had a son, Truman Smith
Rowell of Carthage (my brother), who has a son named Earnest Grant Rowell in
Rochester, New York, who has a son named Truman James Rowell.”
