Born 7 January 1733/34 at Nassau, Delenburg, Bad Marienburg, Germany.  Died 1 August 1802 at Schell's Bush, Herkimer County, New York.  Emigrated from Germany to America with a brother in 1734 to avoid military service in Frederick William's army following the Thirty Years War.  Landed at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  From there settled at Schell's Bush in Herkimer County, New York, and from there moved to Tug Hill in Lewis County, New York.

Born 11 June 1764 at Stone Arabia, Montgomery County, New York; baptized there 5 July 1764.  Died .  Resided at Schell's Bush, Herkimer County, New York.  Employed there as a trapper, woodsman, and farmer.  Moved his family to Tug Hill, Lewis County, New York.

Born 1797 at Schell's Bush, Herkimer County, New York.  Died on Tug Hill, somewhere southwest of Lowville, Lewis County, New York; interred Caswell Cemetery, about 1 mile from Chaufty's Corners on the Evans Mills road.  In the 1830-1840 timeframe moved his family from Tug Hill in Lewis County, New York to Chaufty's Corners (then known as Caswell's Corners, 5 miles from the Village of Theresa on the recently constructed military highway (later Route 37)), Theresa Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Employed as a blacksmith.

Born about 1798.  Died ; interred with Jacob.  Married Marcus Johannes Schell on 27 September 1818 in the Herkimer Reformed Church, Herkimer County, New York.

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born 1824 on Tug Hill, Lewis County, New York.  Died 1907 at Chaufty's Corners, Theresa Township, Jefferson County, New York; interred Caswell Cemetery, about 1 mile from Chaufty's Corners on the Evans Mills road.  Initially after marriage resided on a small farm near Plessis in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  In 1858 moved to Schell Hill, 2 miles south of Chaufty's Corners toward Pamelia on Route 37 ("Military Road")

 

2. Wife: Margaret Ritter

 

Born 1829 in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York; daughter of Henry and Nancy (Rickert) Ritter.  Died 1906 at home near Chaufty's Corners (probably from a heart attack, while walking between the porch and dining room); interred with Jeremiah.  Grew up near Silver Street Road across from the Farrell farm at the corner of Route 37 and Silver Street.  Married Jeremiah Schell about 1849 in Jefferson County, New York.

Jacob Henry Schell "Henry": Born 1850 on his parents' farm near Plessis in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 1907 at Theresa, Jefferson County; interred there in Oakwood Cemetery.  Employed initially as a farmer ½ mile south of Chaufty's Corners.  Later resided on Riverside Avenue in the Village of Theresa and operated a meat market in the Village (the supporting slaughter facility was on the farm he left to his son, Clark).  Married Esther Pennel (b. LeRay Twp, Jefferson Co., NY, d. Theresa, Jefferson Co.), daughter of John and Abigail (Waite)(Harbach) Pennell of Pennell's Corners on Pink School House Road about ½ mile south of Chaufty's Corners.  Henry and Esther had the following children: (order uncertain)

 

(1. John Rush Schell: Born 17 November 1881 in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 17 October 1951 at Theresa, Jefferson County.  Schell Road named for him.

Clark Schell: Born 6 April 1887 in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Took over his father's farm south of Chaufty's Corners.  Also employed as a Deputy Sheriff and jailer at Theresa.  Married Mabel Bogart, daughter of John Bogart (Co. Sheriff and hay merchant at Theresa), and had the following son:

 

(a. Gerald Schell: Took over his father's farm south of Chaufty's Corners.  Married Helen Tilley and had the following children:

Sidney Schell: Born 1852 on his parents' farm near Plessis in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 1916 at Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Married Melinda Jones (b. 1856 in Theresa Twp, Jefferson Co., NY, d. 1937 at Evans Mills, NY), daughter of Peter and Rachel (Pickard) Jones, who resided near the intersection of Drake Road and Snell Road, and had the following children:

 

(1. Lloyd Peter Schell:  Born 1880 in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 1904, while studying to be a clergyman.

 

(2. Floyd Schell: Born 22 May 1889 in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 20 September 1966.  Employed as a farmer.  Married Helen Zeller, daughter of Edward and Mary (Hildt) Zeller, on 19 February 1914 at the Zeller home, Theresa, Jefferson County and for many years resided on Route 37.  In later life they moved to live near their son, Ivan, in Rutland Township.  Floyd and Helen had the following son:

c. Hiram Schell: Born 1 February 1855 on his parents' farm near Plessis in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 1930 at home on the family farm on Schell Hill, LeRay Township, Jefferson County.  Employed as a dairy farmer.  Married Ellen Cornelia "Neelie" Lawrence (b. 1859, d. 1930 at home), who grew up across the road from Henry Schell's farm house.  No children.

 

1920 US Census: Hiram, age 63 and employed as a dairy farmer, was heading a household on New Boston Road, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York (between the Howard Van Allen and Daniel Van Allen residences).  The household also included his wife, Cornelia, age 61.

Nelson Schell: Born 1860 at Schell Hill, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 1923 at Theresa, Jefferson County.  Employed as a farmer.  Married Lucy Wheeler (b. 1860 at Kelsey Bridge, Theresa Twp, Jefferson Co., NY, d. 1942), who prior to marriage was employed as a school teacher, and they took over operation of the farm owned by Lucy's parents.  Later resided in the Village of Theresa at the corner of Depot and Pine Streets.

 

f. Ella Schell: Born 23 January 1864 at Schell Hill, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Married Andrew Jackson (b. 1856 at Sterlingville, LeRay Twp, Jefferson Co., NY, d. 13 Dec 1937 at Black River, Rutland Twp, Jefferson Co.), who was employed as a cheese maker and cheese salesman, and resided east of Pamelia Four Corners, Jefferson County, New York.  Ella and Andrew had the following children:

 

(1. Leslie Schell Jackson: Born 6 August 1891 in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 6 April 1979 at Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence County, New York.

 

(2. Raymond Jackson: Born 31 October 1896 at Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.

 

g. William "Will" Schell: Born 1867 at Schell Hill, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died about 1902, age 35.  Partnered with his brother, Isaac Schell as proprietors of the Jefferson Valley Cheese Factory.  Also operated a farm on the Dutch Settlement Road north of Evans Mills.  Married Jennie Farrell (b. 18 Oct 1867, Theresa, Jefferson Co., NY, d. 1926), who grew up near Chaufty's Corners at the intersection of Route 37 and Silver Street, and they had the following children:

 

(1. Nelson Henry Schell: Born 30 September 1897 at Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 16 January 1983.

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born 7 August 1857 on his parents' farm near Plessis in Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 9 July 1943 at Theresa, Jefferson County, New York.  At age 8 months (spring 1856) moved with his parents to Schell Hill, LeRay Township, Jefferson County.  Partnered with his brother, William Schell as proprietors of the Jefferson Valley Cheese Factory.  Retired to the former Dr. Kelsey residence on Commercial Street in the Village of Theresa, Jefferson County.

 

1920 US Census: Isaac, age 61 and widowed, was heading a household on Commercial Street in the Village of Theresa, Theresa Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his daughter, Elsie Schell, age 35.

 

2. Wife: Ida Mae Irvin

 

Born 14/4 February 1855; daughter of William and Polly (Van Allen) Irvin (Para. 2.b.(2.(b. of gen 4 of the Van Allen Annex).  Died 4 March 1910, age 55, from complications of measles at Theresa, Jefferson County, New York.  Married Isaac Schell in 1878.

Cora Eva Schell: Born 1 March 1892 on Schell Hill, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 2 February 1979 at Theresa, Jefferson County, New York; interred Theresa Cemetery.  Moved with her father and sister, Elsie, to the Village of Theresa.  Married Benjamin "Ben" Lynde Allen (b. 27 Jan 1895 on Elm Ridge Road, LeRay Twp, Jefferson Co., NY) on 15 October 1919, who she was engaged to prior to his participation in World War I, and they then moved to and took over operation of Cora's father's farm on Schell Hill.  Cora and Ben had the following son:

1. Biographical notes:

 

Born 23 September 1879 at the family homestead (his grandfather, Jeremiah Schell's farm) on Schell Hill, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 21 August 1949 at home, 816 LeRay Street, Watertown, Jefferson County; interred Oakwood Cemetery, Theresa, Jefferson County.  In the early 1900s, following the death of his grandfather, Jeremiah Schell, purchased Jeremiah's 172-acre property on Schell Hill, which included the "Federalist" house that had been owned previously by his Aunt Elizabeth (Schell) Timmerman.

 

2. Wife: Beanice Brown

 

Born 23 May 1881; daughter of Cortland E. and Ruby (?) Brown of Bradley Street Road (Route 12), about 1 mile from Perch Lake Road toward Watertown, just east of Route 342.  Died 17 February 1955 at home on LeRay Street in Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.  Grew up in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County.  Met Newton Schell at the Pamelia Grange, marrying him on 8 June 1910 at Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.

Zimmer (b. 1913, d. 1978; interred with Eileen) and resided in Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.  Owned a farm adjacent to the Warren Van Allen farm in LeRay Township, Jefferson County and later owned the Warren Van Allen Farm, after Hiram Schell.  John and Eileen had the following children: (order uncertain)

Zimmer: (more info) Born 13 October 1937.  Died winter 2012; interred 24 July 2012 in Oakwood Cemetery, Theresa, Jefferson County, New York.  Graduated 1955 from Evans Mills High School, Evans Mills, New York and subsequently from Cobleskill Agricultural and Technical College, Cobleskill, New York.  Resided on Drake Road, Theresa.

Schell: (more info) Born 16 April 1918 at the family residence in Theresa Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 10 November 2009, age 91, at the Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown, Jefferson County; interred Oakwood Cemetery, Theresa.  Received grammar school education in the Pink School House in LeRay Township.  Subsequently graduated from Theresa High.  Earned a bachelor of science degree majoring in education from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, Erie County, New York, and a masters degree majoring in education from SUNY Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York.  Resided many years at 816 LeRay Street, Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.  For 35 years taught English at Calcium, Alexandria Bay, and Watertown, all in Jefferson County.

 

e. Evelyn Schell: (more info) Graduated from Potsdam State Teacher’s College, Potsdam, New York and taught school at Central Park Junior High School, Schenectady, New York.  Married Ronald “Ron” J. Skilton of Schenectady, son of C. P. Skilton of Carbondale, Pennsylvania, at Asbury Methodist Church in Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.  Ron attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, Massachusetts and graduated from Lehigh University.  Served in the US Navy during World War II and, following college, was employed by the General Electric Corporation, Schenectady as an engineer.  They initially resided at Schenectady, New York.  Later resided at Orinda, California.

Born 30 March 1911 in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, new  York.  Died Friday, 3 November 1995, age 84, at Genesis HealthCare of New York, Watertown, Jefferson County, age 84; interred Oakwood Cemetery, Theresa, Jefferson County.  Graduated from Theresa High School and the Watertown School of Commerce.  Was employed as a farmer, operating the Springledj Farm on Route 37 for 35 years, retiring in 1970.  Was also a Director and was the President of the Farmers National Bank in Theresa.  Bought the Eddy farm and resided there until 1985.  Resided last at Milltown Elderly Housing in Evans Mills, Jefferson County, New York.

Born .  Died .  Married Irvin B. Schell on 23 August 1934 at the Eddy home in Kelsey Bridge, Theresa Township, Jefferson County, New York.
