Origin of the surname "Slater" (other spellings: Slatar; Slauter; Slatter; Slafter; and Slaughter.  "Ugh" in early English was pronounced as "f," as in laughter, cough, and rough.  Misspelling by the family over time resulted the "ugh" being dropped and replaced by "f."  Joseph, son of John Slaughter (generation 10, below), dropped the "f," making the spelling of his name Slater.  In 1716 Joseph Slater moved from Lynn, Massachusetts to Mansfield, Connecticut, purchasing property on the Willimantic River.

9   Joseph Slaughter/Slafter/Slater

1. Biographical notes:

Born 1698/90 at Willington, Connecticut (also seen: b. Lynn, Middlesex Co., MA).  Died 1788/87 at Killingly, Tolland County, Connecticut.  Consciously or unconsciously changed the spelling of his surname from Slaughter (pronounced Slafter) to Slafter, to Slater, signing legal documents with each spelling.  "Ugh" in English was pronounced as an "f," as in cough, rough, and laughter.  It isn't clear why the "f" was dropped.

Earliest mention of Joseph Slater in official records is in 1718.  Lived at Mansfield, Tolland, Willington, and Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut.  Employed as a blacksmith and farmer.  James Barns of Killingly sold Joseph Slater of Scituate, Rhode Island (blacksmith) 6 acres of land at Killingly on 14 May 1731.  Thereafter Joseph was recorded at Killingly, though his son, Joseph, was recoreded as being of Scituate.  Joseph was interred in a family cemetery near Scituate, Providence County, Rhode Island.  He signed a petition for incorporation of Willington.  Sold that property and in 1735 and moved to Killingly, Connecticut, near the border with Scituate, Rhode Island.  In 1764 Joseph sold an estate in Tolland.  His heirs signed for title to his property on 16 June 1788, so his death was probably within a few months prior to that date.

Slater, Ida Viola (Pickard) 2 (83) #.jpg

Born March 1866 at Pamelia Four Corners, Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York (note: gravestone says b. 1865); daughter of Menzo (b. 1828, d. 1869) and Harriet (Timmerman) Pickard (b. 1845).  Died 1955 in a nursing home (probably the original Keep Home) on Washington Street, Watertown, Jefferson County, New York; interred with Frederick.  Her father died from complications of a broken back when she was a young child.  Though it was an accident caused by one of Menzo's brother-in-laws jumping on him, Ida never forgave her uncle, and to her dying day had nothing good to say about her mother's family.  Ida was educated at a girl's academy in Antwerp Township, Jefferson County.   She married Frederick Ellsworth Slater in 1884 (abt age 19) at the Vincent Slater residence, Black River, Jefferson County.  At some point after 1885 Ida had a hysterectomy at the Kellogg Battle Creek Sanitarium, Battle Creek, Michigan, so was only able to have one child.

Following her husband's death, it appears Ida and Vincent may have moved from Watertown to the Village of Black River.  In 1935 she resided with Vincent in Washington, D.C., where Vincent was employed as an organ salesman.  By 1940 they both resided in Princeton Borough, Mercer County, New Jersey.  And during World War II, when Vincent was stationed in Miami, Dade County, Florida, Ida resided with him.

Note: Vincent Ellsworth Slater said: "Menzo [Picard] came from Otsego County, New York.  I vaguely recall my grandmother, Ida (Pickard) Slater, mentioning 'Cherry Valley' as his place of origin, but I'm not certain of this.  She always said she was 'Mohawk Dutch' to make sure she was not confused with the Pennsylvania Dutch, who are of Dutch heritage.  She claimed that her ancestors kept moving up the Hudson River, then the Mohawk River, to distance themselves from the English."

1870 US Census: Harriet Pickard, age 27 (b. NYS), whose real estate was valued at $700 and personal property was valued at $3,300, resided in the household headed by her father-in-law, Adolphus Pickard, age 69, (b. NYS) and a retired farmer, in Pamelia Township (Watertown Post Office), Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included her daughter, Ida V. Pickard, age 7 (b. NYS); and daughter, Jenny Pickard, age 2 (b. NYS).

Herkimer Co., NY) and widowed, with no occupation recorded, was heading a household in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  She owned property.  The household also included her daughter wife, Ida V. Pickard, age 12 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); daughter, Jennie Pickard, age 8 (b. Jefferson Co., NY); and father, Adolphus Pickard, age 74 (b. Herkimer Co., NY) and employed as a farmer.

NYS) and employed keeping house, was heading a household in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included her daughter, Ida Pickard, age 17 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS); and daughter, Jennie Pickard, age 12 (b. NYS; parents b. NYS).

NYS) and widowed, with no occupation recorded, was heading a household at 349 Nassan Street in Princeton Borough, Mercer County, New Jersey.  She had completed 4 years of high school.  The household also included her son, Vincent Slater, age 26 (b. Note: Frederick and Ida (Pickard) Slater also raised, from a very early age, their grandson, Vincent Ellsworth Slater, when he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and, for reasons of safety and practicality (his mother had Vincent and 2 other children in just 3 years), was separated from his siblings in order to receive the special care and treatment that disease necessitated.
