Born about 1746. Died 13 July 1829 in Cornwall Township, Litchfield County,
Connecticut. Resided
there. Was a
Quaker. Despite that, was a
veteran of the Revolutionary War; enlisted June 1776 in Captain Roger's Company
of the 2nd Battalion of Wadsworth's Brigade, which reinforced
General Washington at New York City and participated in the Battle of Long
Island and White Plains. Mustered out 25 December 1776. May also have served later
at the Battle of Trenton.
In 1776 James worked the Reverend Hezekiah Gold's
farm in Cornwall Township.
Was, physically, a very large man and had a jovial
disposition.

Born 3 November 1748 at Halifax,
Plymouth County, Massachusetts; perhaps daughter of Edward May of Cornwall, Litchfield County, Connecticut, and reportedly a direct
descendant of Mayflower passenger, Robert
Billington. Died 20 May 1834. Member of the Cornwall First Church as early as 1775. Married James Sterling on
28 June 1767 in Cornwall Township, Connecticut.

Township, New York (abt 1 mile north of Indian River). Referred to as
"Judge" Sterling, having been a justice of the peace and being
generally trusted to arbitrate neighborhood conflicts. Was the first Highway
Commissioner of Antwerp Township and a Royal Arch Mason.

at age 10 months and 200 pounds at age 14.
As an adult he stood 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighed 396 pounds.
Became
acquainted with the Brownville area of Jefferson County, New York when his
militia unit was sent there during the War of 1812 to repel a contingent of
British forces.
Employed in the
manufacture of iron; eventually known as "The Iron King of Northern New
York." In 1836 James purchased the Hopestill Foster land in Philadelphia Township, Jefferson
County, New York, where he developed the Sterling Iron Mines. In 1840 he organized the Philadelphia Iron
Company and constructed a charcoal-fired blast furnace for manufacturing pig
iron in the Village named after him, Sterlingville. In 1844 established a 2nd blast
furnace at Sterlingburg, about 1 mile east of
Antwerp, Jefferson County, and soon after purchased the furnace at Wegatchie, St. Lawrence County, New York.

Was associated with his father in the iron manufacturing business. After his father died, Alexander ran the business until 1870, when he partnered with Edgar Peckham of New York. The economic downturn of 1877 made the venture unprofitable. At that point Alexander went into the flour and feed business with his brother, Daniel, at Carthage, Wilna Township, Jefferson County.

female under age 5; 1 female age 5 to 10; 1 female age 10 to 15; and 1 female
age 30 to 40.
