1.  Biographical notes:

 

Born about 1746.  Died 13 July 1829 in Cornwall Township, Litchfield County, Connecticut.  Resided there.  Was a Quaker.  Despite that, was a veteran of the Revolutionary War; enlisted June 1776 in Captain Roger's Company of the 2nd Battalion of Wadsworth's Brigade, which reinforced General Washington at New York City and participated in the Battle of Long Island and White Plains.  Mustered out 25 December 1776.  May also have served later at the Battle of Trenton.

 

In 1776 James worked the Reverend Hezekiah Gold's farm in Cornwall Township.

 

Was, physically, a very large man and had a jovial disposition.

Born 3 November 1748 at Halifax, Plymouth County, Massachusetts; perhaps daughter of Edward May of Cornwall, Litchfield County, Connecticut, and reportedly a direct descendant of Mayflower passenger, Robert Billington.  Died 20 May 1834.  Member of the Cornwall First Church as early as 1775.  Married James Sterling on 28 June 1767 in Cornwall Township, Connecticut.

Thomas Sterling: Born 6 December 1768 in Cornwall Township, Litchfield County, Connecticut.  Baptized there 1775 in the Cornwall First Church.  Died 26 November 1828, age 61; interred in the old Brooklyn Cemetery.  Employed as a wheel wright and cabinet/furniture maker.  Was a Quaker.  Married Mehitable Norton (d. 18 Sep 1827, age 60; interred with Thomas) and in 1812 moved to Hop Bottom (later Brooklyn) Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.  Thomas and Mehitable had the following child:

1840 US Census: Isaac H. Sterling, age 40 to 50 [Isaac would have been abt 41 yrs old], was heading a household in Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.  The household also included 2 males age 5 to 10; 3 males age 15 to 20; 1 female under age 5; and 1 female age 30 to 40.

 

1850 US Census: Isaac H. Sterling, age 51 (b. CT) and employed as farmer, was heading a household in Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.  His real estate was valued at $2,500.  The household also included Harriet Sterling, age 47 (b. NY); Ansel Sterling, age 25 (b. PA) and employed as a farmer; James H. Sterling, age 23 (b. PA) and employed as a farmer; Hannon Sterling, age 19 (b. PA) and employed as a farmer; Ralph Sterling, age 17 (b. PA) and employed as a farmer; Harriet Sterling, age 12 (b. PA); Charles M. Sterling, age 10 (b. PA); Julia Sterling, age 8 (b. PA); son, Earnest Sterling, age 1 (b. PA); and servant, Lydia Stephens, age 15 (b. PA; parents b. PA).  His suspected father, James Sterling, age 53, was heading a household next door.

View Cemetery.  Married Jennie/Jenny Delphia Eastman (photos) (b. 28 Jul 1863, d. 1 Apr 1944; interred with Emerson), daughter of Nathan Back and Rachel (White) Eastman, on 10 April 1880.  Jennie was employed as a seamstress.  Emerson and Jennie had the following children:

Hannah Sterling: Born 7 January 1785 in Cornwall Township, Litchfield County, Pennsylvania.  Died 20 April 1851 at Chester, Massachusetts from complications of breast cancer; initially interred there, but later moved to Blandford, Massachusetts.  Married Thomas Lucas (b. 7 Apr 1784 at Norfolk, CT, d. 31 Jul 1858 at Chester, MA; interred Blandford, MA), son of John (b. 2 Jun 1741, d. 22 Jun 1814) and Jerusha (?) Lucas (d. 21 May 1819), on 30 January 1816 and later that year moved to Blandford, Massachusetts.  They later moved to Canaan, New York.  Thomas was employed as a farmer.  Hannah and Thomas had the following children:

 

(1. Heman Stanly Lucas: Born 10 September 1817.  Died 20 June 1900 at Franklin, North Carolina.  Employed as a physician; medical degree from Berkshire Institution on 3 November 1841.  Married Maria Alzina Kendall on 9 March 1842; no children.

 

(2. Mary Eliza Lucas: Born 4 May 1819.  Died 20 April 1844 from complications of child birth, as did the child.  Married Dyer Ide Wilber on 4 March 1841.  Following Mary's death, Dyer married again.

1.  Biographical notes:

 

Born 1769 in Cornwall Township, Litchfield County, Connecticut.  Baptized there in the Cornwall First Church.  Died 13 June 1828 in Antwerp Township, Jefferson County, New York.  In 1804 moved from Connecticut to Antwerp Township, New York (abt 1 mile north of Indian River).  Referred to as "Judge" Sterling, having been a justice of the peace and being generally trusted to arbitrate neighborhood conflicts.  Was the first Highway Commissioner of Antwerp Township and a Royal Arch Mason.

Born 14 July 1771 in England; daughter of John and Mary (Fitch) Bradford.  Died 12 October 1828.  Married Daniel Sterling on 25 July 1793.

a. Daniel Fitch Sterling: Born 12 September 1797 in Antwerp Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 11 October 1869.  Married twice, each time to a widow; no children.  Resided at Rome, Herkimer County, New York.

 

b. Lieutenant Colonel James “Big Jim” Sterling: (photos) Born 25 January 1800 at Norwich, Connecticut (also seen: b. VT).  Died 23 July 1863 at Sterlingville, Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Was a large man, Physically, weighing 40 pounds at age 10 months and 200 pounds at age 14.  As an adult he stood 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighed 396 pounds.

 

Became acquainted with the Brownville area of Jefferson County, New York when his militia unit was sent there during the War of 1812 to repel a contingent of British forces.

 

Employed in the manufacture of iron; eventually known as "The Iron King of Northern New York."  In 1836 James purchased the Hopestill Foster land in Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York, where he developed the Sterling Iron Mines.  In 1840 he organized the Philadelphia Iron Company and constructed a charcoal-fired blast furnace for manufacturing pig iron in the Village named after him, Sterlingville.  In 1844 established a 2nd blast furnace at Sterlingburg, about 1 mile east of Antwerp, Jefferson County, and soon after purchased the furnace at Wegatchie, St. Lawrence County, New York.

 

1840 US Census: James, age 40 to 50, was heading a household in Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included 1 male under age 5; 2 males age 5 to 10; 1 male age 15 to 20; 1 male age 40 to 50; 1female under age 5; 1 female age 10 to 15; 1 female age 30 to 40; and 1 female age 60 to 70.

James Sterling married Annis/Annie Coleman (b. 23 May 1809, d. 6 Apr 1875 at Sterlingville, NY), daughter of Mary Richardson (Bullock) Coleman (b. 1781 at Huilford, VT, d. 18 Oct 1865) on 9 October 1826 at Antwerp, Jefferson County, New York and moved to Rossie, St. Lawrence County, New York.  Shortly thereafter they moved back to Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, where the Village of Sterlingville grew around the iron works he developed.  James and Annis had the following children:

Mary Bradford Sterling: Born 12 April 1830.  Died 16 March 1901 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  Driving force behind construction of Trinity Chapel at Great Bend, Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York and the Mission Chapel of the Redeemer, Watertown, Jefferson County. Authored 2 books and known for other intellectual pursuits.  Married George W. Clark (d. Jul 1886) on 27 May 1851; no children.

 

(2. Alexander Pliny Sterling: (male) Born 21 September 1832 at Redwood, Jefferson County, New York.  Died 9 February 1899 at Canajoharie, New York.  Was associated with his father in the iron manufacturing business.  After his father died, Alexander ran the business until 1870, when he partnered with Edgar Peckham of New York.  The economic downturn of 1877 made the venture unprofitable.  At that point Alexander went into the flour and feed business with his brother, Daniel, at Carthage, Wilna Township, Jefferson County.

 

Married Elizabeth Garnham (d. 22 March 1898 at Antwerp, NY, in the same room she was married), daughter of Robert and Mary (Rush) Garnham, on 10 May 1853 at Antwerp, Jefferson County and had the following children:

James Sterling, Jr.: Born 10 March 1836.  Died 23 March 1902 at Great Bend, Champion Township, Jefferson County, New York.  Employed as a farmer.  About 1882 moved to Port Leyden, New York, where he was employed in the iron manufacturing business.  Later moved to Luther, Michigan, where he manufactured chemicals.  Married (1st) Mrs. Julia Clark Burlingame (d. 8 Jul 1863) on 2 October 1855 at Plessis, New York and had the following children:

1900 US Census: James, age 61 (b. Jun 1838 in NYS, father b. NYS, mother b. CT) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Antwerp Township.  The household also included his wife of 37 years, Mariette Sterling (age 56 – b. Aug 1843 in NYS, father b. VT, mother b. By one account James Lloyd Sterling married Mariette Hicks, which appears to be supported by the 1900 US Census.  By another account he married Mariette Wait (b. Aug 1843), daughter of James D. and Mariette (Lawton) Wait of Antwerp, on 25 December 1863.  Both accounts have the following children:

1900 US Census: John, age 40 (b. Jan 1860) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his wife of 18 years, Sarah Sterling (age 38 – b. Jan 1862, had had 6 children, all still alive); daughter, Amanda Sterling (age 18 – b. May 1882, single); daughter, Lena Sterling (age 13 – b. Nov 1886); daughter, Annis Sterling (age 13 –b. Feb 1887); Frank Sterling (age 11 – b. May 1889); and son, Paul Sterling (age 7 – b. Jan 1893). All, and their parents, were born in New York State.

 

John Riley Sterling married Sarah Evans (b. 1 Jan 1863/62), daughter of Samuel and Celestine (Vandewalker) Evans of Wilna Township, Jefferson County, on 30 October 1881 and had the following children:

 

(a. Amanda Celestine Sterling: Born 20 May 1882.

 

(b. Mary Bradford Sterling: Born 21 October 1883.

 

(c. Lena Belle Sterling: Born 11 November 1885/86.

 

(d. Annis Adeline Sterling: Born 28 February 1887.

 

(e. Frank Howard Sterling: Born 17 May 1889.

 

(f. Pauline Blanche Sterling: Born 25 January 1893.

 

4   Mary Bradford Sterling:

 

Born 28 October 1856 at Sterlingville, Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York State.  Died 1929.  Married James M. Seaman, generation 4 of the Seaman Annex on 15 February 1882.

1910 US Census: Charles G., age 67 (b. English speaking Canada, father b. NYS, mother b. English speaking Canada), a widower, and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included his daughter, Rowena Sterling (age 35, single); daughter, Mary J. Sterling (age 23, single); and son, Thomas W. Sterling (age 22, single, employed as a farm laborer).

 

Charles G. Sterling married (?) and had the following children:

 

a. Rowena Sterling: Born about 1875.

 

b. Mary J. Sterling: Born about 1887.

 

2. Samuel Sterling: Born between 1790 and 1800.  Does not appear to be the son of James Sterling (b. 1793), generation 7, above.

 

1840 US Census: Samuel, age 40 to 50, was heading a household in Philadelphia Township, Jefferson County, New York.  The household also included 1 male under age 5; 1 male age 5 to 10; 1 male age 15 to 20; 1 male age 20 to 30; 1 female under age 5; 1 female age 5 to 10; 1 female age 10 to 15; and 1 female age 30 to 40.
