a. As a youth and young adult in LeRaysville, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York, Stanley was referred to as "Fenton" to differentiate him from his uncle, Stanley Dow Cool, who resided across the street.

1940 US Census: Fenton Slater, age 21 (b. NYS), single, and employed as a hired man, resided in the household headed by Richard W. Staie, age 43 (b. NYS) and employed as a US Postal Mail Carrier, on Main Street in the Village of Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York. Fenton had completed 1 year of high school and resided in the same township in April 1935.
