Born 16 September 1791 at Pembroke, Massachusetts.  Died 10 August 1864, age 72 years, 10 months, 24 days, at Freetown; interred East Freetown Cemetery.  Employed as a farmer in Freetown Township, Bristol County, Massachusetts.

 

1850 US Census: Calvin Thomas, age 61 (b. MA) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Freetown Township, Bristol County, Massachusetts.  His real estate was valued at $4,350.  The household also included his wife, Lois Thomas, age 40 (b. MA); daughter, Jane Thomas, age 30 (b. MA); daughter, Frances Thomas, age 21 (b. MA); son, Charles H. Thomas, age 16 (b. MA) and employed as a mariner; and Henry J. Snow, age 24 (b. MA) and employed as a carpenter.

 

1860 US Census: Calvin Thomas, age 69 (b. MA) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Freetown Township (E. b. Calvin Thomas, Jr.: Born 1 February 1825 at Freetown.  Died 28 November 1863; interred East Freetown Cemetery.  Employed as a stone cutter.  Veteran of the American Civil War.

 

1850 US Census: Calvin Thomas, age 23 (b. MA) and employed as a laborer, was heading a household in Freetown Township, Bristol County, Massachusetts.  The household also included his wife, Hope A. Thomas, age 18 (b. MA); and daughter, Ellen M. Thomas, age 1 (b. MA).

 

Calvin Thomas, Jr., age 23, married Hope Ann Richardson (b. 28 Jan 1830 at Freetown), age 16, son of William B. and Elizabeth (Clark) Richardson, on 4 June 1848 at Freetown and had the following children:

Born 12 July 1834.  Died 8 August 1905, age 71; interred East Freetown Cemetery.  In 1850 employed as a mariner.  In 1860 employed as a farmer.

1870 US Census: Charles H. Harper, age 36 (b. MA) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Freetown Township (N. Dartmouth PO), Bristol County, Massachusetts.  His real estate was valued at $4,000 and his personal property was valued at $1,000.  The household also included his wife, Mary E. Thomas, age 31 (b. MA); daughter, Mary J. Thomas, age 10 (b. MA); son, Calvin L. Thomas, age 5 (b. MA); and Betsey Cole, age 68 (age 68).  Of interest, Charles' close neighbor was John Rounsville, age 65, and employed as a laborer.

 

1880 US Census: Charles Thomas, age 45 (b. MA; parents b. England) and employed as a rigger, was heading a household in New Bedford Township, Bristol County, Massachusetts.  The household also included his wife, Nancy W. Harper, age 32 (b. MA); daughter, Mary E. Harper, age 11 (b. MA); son, James J. Harper, age 10 (b. MA); daughter, Elisabeth C. Harper, age 8 (b. MA); daughter, Isadore D. Harper, age 6 (b. MA); and son, William E. Harper, age 4 (b. MA).

 

1860 US Census: No record found for the James J. Harper family anywhere in the US.

 

1870 US Census: James J. Harper, age 53 (b. England) and employed as a ship keeper, was heading a household in New Bedford Township, Bristol County, Massachusetts.  The household also included his wife, Nancy W. HarperBowye s

 

Mary E. Harper's sister, Addie Harper, lost her husband when her two children were small.  She resided at Black Mountain, North Carolina, where she worked in the hospital.

Apr 1865 in MA), widowed, and with no occupation recorded, was heading a household in Freetown Township, Bristol County, Massachusetts.  The household also included his father, Charles H. Thomas, age 65 (b. Jul 1834 in MA), widowed, and employed as a mail carrier.

 

1910 US Census: Calvin L. Thomas, age 45 (b. MA) and employed as a laborer doing odd jobs, was heading a household in Freetown Township, Bristol County, Massachusetts.  He had been married twice.  The household also included his wife of 3 years (her 1st marriage), Lottie Thomas, age 21 (b. MA), who had had no children.

1910 US Census: Charles A. Thomas, age 38 (b. MA; parents b. MA) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household on East Freetown Railroad Station Road in Freetown Township, Bristol County, Massachusetts.  He had been married twice.  The household also included his wife, Mary S. Thomas, age 33 (b. MA; parents b. MA), who had had 2 children, both still alive; "son-in-law," James B. Archer, age 15 (b. MA) and single; and "daughter-in-law," Doris Archer, age 13 (b. MA) and single.

 

1920 US Census: Charles A. Thomas, age 48 (b. MA) and employed managing his own farm, was heading a household on Chace Road in Freetown Township, Bristol County, Massachusetts.  The household also included his wife, Mary F. Thomas, age 43 (b. MA); and daughter, Mary J. Thomas, age 12 (b. MA).

 

Charles A. Thomas married Annie J. (?) (b. Mar 1870 in MA) and had the following daughter:

 

(1. Mary J. F. Thomas: Born about 1908 in Massachusetts.  Per Grace (Cowen) Howard in a letter to her sister-in-law, Mabel (Froome) Cowen, Mary (Thomas) Chace "made quite a study" of her family's history.

 

1910 US Census: Earnie Chace, age 3, resided in the household headed by his father, Elijah D. Chace, age 49 (b. MA; parents b. MA) and employed as  a lumber merchant.  The household also included his wife of 28 years, Alberta B. Chace, age 48 (b. MA; parents b. MA), who had had 13 children, 10 of whom were still alive; son, Leroy M. Chace, age 20 (b. MA) and employed in a saw mill; son, Martin Chace, age 18 (b. MA); daughter, Isabel Chace, age 16 (b. MA); daughter, Agnes Chace, age 13 (b. MA); daughter, Marian Chace, age 8 (b. MA); and daughter, Doris Chace, age 5 (b. MA).

 

1920 US Census: Ernest D. Chace, age 12, resided in the household headed by his father, Elijah D. Chace, age 57 (b. MA; parents b. MA) and employed as a jointer in a saw mill, on Chace Road in East Freetown Township, Bristol County, Massachusetts.  The household also included Ernest's mother, Albeta B. Chace, age 57 (b. MA; parents b. MA); and sister, Dorris F. Chace, age 14 (b. MA).

 

1930 US Census: Ernest D. Chace, age 23 (b. MA; parents b. MA) and employed as a trucker (general work), was heading a household on Chase Road in Freetown Township, Bristol County, Massachusetts.  He was married at age 18.  The household also included his wife, Mary J. F. Chace, age 23 (b. MA; parents b. MA), who was married at age 18; son, Merrill E. Chace, age 4 years and 3 months (b. MA); and son, Malcolm A. Chace, age 1 year and 3 months (b. MA).

 

1940 US Census: Ernest Chase, age 33 (b. MA) and employed as a log trucker, was heading a household on Chase Road in Freetown Township, Bristol County, Massachusetts.  He had completed 1 year of high school, and he was living in the same township on 1 April 1935.  The household also included his wife, Mary Chase, age 33 (b. MA), who had completed 4 years of high school; son, Merrell Chase, age 14 (b. MA) and in school; son, Malcolm Chase, age 11 (b. MA) and in school; daughter, Nancy Chase, age 10 (b. MA) and in school; son, Thomas Chase, age 7 (b. MA) and in school; and daughter, Irene Chase, age 5 (b. MA).

 

Mary J. F. Thomas married Ernest D. Chace (b. abt 1907 in MA) and had the following children:

 

(a. Merrill E. Chace: Born about 1926 in Bristol County, Massachusetts.

 

(b. Malcolm A. Chace: Born about 1929 in Bristol County, Massachusetts.  In 1951 was serving in the US Army, stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  Married (?) and had the following son:

(c. Nancy Chace: Born about 1930 in Bristol County, Massachusetts.  Married Everett Ellis, who served in the US military in Texas.  Nancy and Everett had the following daughter:
