1.  Biographical notes:

 

Born 2 January 1876 in Scotland.  Died October 1964, age 88, in New Jersey.  Immigrated to the US, arriving 25 April 1909 aboard the Caronia out of Liverpool, England; naturalized 15 June 1920 before the Court of Common Pleas of Essex County, New Jersey.  Employed as a building carpenter.

 

1910 US Census: John W. Turbyne, age 33 (b. Scotland; parents b. Scotland), married once, and employed as a house carpenter, was boarding in the household headed by Mary West, age 46 (b. Scotland) in the City of Newark, Essex County, New Jersey.  John immigrated to the US in 1909.  The household also included John Deans, age 27 (b. England) and single, who was also employed as a house carpenter and also immigrated to the US in 1909.

 

1915 NJ Census: John Turbyne (b. Scotland), was heading a household in the City of Newark, Essex County, New Jersey.  The household also included his wife, Jesse Turbyne (b. Scotland); son, Stanley Turbyne (b. England); son, Leslie Turbyne (b. England); and James Turbyne (b. England).

 

1917 WWI Draft Registration: On 12 September 1918 John William Turbyne (b. 2 Jan 1876), resided at 83 Sussex Avenue in the City of East Orange, Essex County, New Jersey.  He was employed as a carpenter for the Butterworth Judson Corporation.

 

1920 US Census: John W. Turbyne, age 43 (b. Scotland; parents b. Scotland) and employed as a carpenter for a contractor, was heading a household at 74 Lennox Avenue in the City of East Orange, Essex County, New Jersey.  He immigrated to the US in 1908; 1st papers for naturalization submitted.  The household also included his wife, Jessie Turbyne, age 44 (b. Scotland; parents b. Scotland) and employed as janitress in an apartment house, who immigrated to the US with her 3 children in 1911 (1st papers for naturalization submitted; son, William S. Turbyne, age 16 (b. England) and employed as a file clerk for an electric appliance corporation; son, David L. Turbyne, age 12 (b. England) and not employed; and son, James A. Turbyne, age 11 (b. England) and not employed.

 

1930 US Census: John W. Turbyne, age 54 (b. Scotland; parents b. Scotland) and employed as a building carpenter, was heading a household at 74 Lennox Avenue in the City of East Orange, Essex County, New Jersey.  He immigrated to the US in 1907 and was subsequently naturalized.  The household also included his wife of 26 years, Jessie A. Turbyne, age 54 (b. Scotland) and employed as Superintendant of an apartment house, who immigrated to the US in 1911 with her 3 children, all of whom were subsequently naturalized; son, William S. Turbyne, age 26 (b. England) and employed as an electrical engineer; son, David L. Turbyne, age 22 (b. England) and not employed; and son, James A. Turbyne, age 21 (b. England) and employed as a clerk for an insurance company.

 

1940 US Census: John Turbyne, age 64 (b. Scotland) and employed as a carpenter doing building construction, was heading a household at Packanack Lake, Wayne Township, Passaic County, New Jersey.  He had completed 8th grade, and his residence was valued at $3,500.  The household also included his wife, Jessie  Turbyne, age 65 (b. Scotland), who had completed 8th grade; and son, David Turbyne, age 33 (b. England), single, and employed as a lawyer for an insurance company, who had completed 4 years of college.  On 1 April 1935 they all resided in East Orange Township, Essex County, New Jersey.

Born 17 April 1875 at Macduff, Banffshire, Scotland.  Died 21 April 1950; interred Restland Memorial Park, East Hanover, Morris County, New Jersey.  Emigrated to the US from England in 1911; subsequently naturalized.  Employed as superintendant of an apartment house.

Born 7 November 1908 at Newcastle on Tyne, England.  Died .  Immigrated to the US from England in 1911.  Married Clara Louise Cool, descendant # 3 of generation 12 of the Descendants of Louise Mehitable (Drake) Cool on 7 December 1935 at LeRaysville, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York.
