Origin of the
surname “Van Allen/Van Alen:”
The
earliest families with surname Van Alen existed in the middle ages in the area
of Germany that borders Oldenzaal, Netherlands – and perhaps elsewhere. The immigrant(s) who brought the van Alen
family name to America in the mid-1600s came from Oldenzaal, Netherlands,
settling in the Albany and Kinderhook areas on the Hudson River frontier. Members of the similar sounding Van Halen/Hallen
family came to America from Utrecht, Netherlands about the same time, but
settled further south in the Kingston, New York and Hackensack, New Jersey
regions. First names like Laurens and
Peter were common to both family groups, which has caused confusion tracing
ancestors back to their European origins.
Van Allen Cemetery: Many of
Lucina’s direct ancestors were interred in the Van Allen (also called New
Boston) Cemetery in the Town of LeRay, Jefferson County, New York. This cemetery is located on the west side of
Drake (New Boston) Road about 5 miles south of Route 441 and about ˝ mile east
of Interstate Route 81 (exit 49), where Drake Road intersects with Pink School
House Road.

First record in New Netherlands is dated 11 September 1658, when he petitioned authorities at Fort Orange (original name for Albany). Departed New Netherlands for Netherlands 19 August 1662. Recorded as owning property at Kinderhook, New Netherlands on 9 May 1672. Also resided at Rensselaerwyck (now Rensselaerville), Albany County, New York.
Married Marytje/Maria Teller (b. 1648, d. abt 1672), daughter of Willem (b. abt 1616, immigrated to New Netherlands 1639) and Margariet (Donckesen) Teller, about 1666 and had the following children:
(1. Johannes van Alen: Born about 1668 at Albany, New York. Died ; interred at Albany on 12 April 1750. Was orphaned at about age 6, so his uncles, Laurens and Andreas Teller became his guardians. In the freight business; master of the sloop, Eliza in 1711. Married Christina Ten Broeck (b. May 1672 at Albany, d. there 4 Oct 1744, age 72 yrs, 5 mo.), daughter of Dirck Wessels and Christina (van Buren) Ten Broeck, on 30 December 1701 at the Ten Broeck residence and had the following children:

Note: Given the similarity in dates, spelling of the surname,
and the names given to children, William J. Hoffman and other scholars through
the years have felt the Laurens van Alen and Pieter van Alen found in early
Fort Orange (now Albany) and Kinderhook, New Netherlands, were most likely the
sons of Johannes van Alen of Oldenzaal, Netherlands. However, records in New Netherlands do not
name the parents of Laurens and Pieter of Kinderhook, so that cannot be
proven. In fact, it has not been shown
conclusively that Laurents and Pieter were even brothers.

before 25 May 1660, when he and others (including presumed brother, Peter van
Alen) petitioned local authorities. Leased
a house and lot in Albany on 8 August 1661.
Purchased land at Kinderhook (south, southeast of Albany) on 7 October
1669. Held several public offices at
Albany. Referred to as "of
Kinderhook" on 4 May 1697 when he purchased a house with garden and orchard
and 2 parcels of land at Grootstruck in Kinderhook Township. A Van Allen house at Kinderhook that dates
from roughly that time is still in use there, maintained by the Historical
Society of Kinderhook, New York. Also on
the property is a school house said to be the inspiration for Washington
Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Twin. Born 1 August 1835. Died August 1908 and interred in the Van Allen Cemetery, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York. Was a farmer with property adjacent to the John Zimmer farm (of interest, John and Eileen (Schell) Zimmer later owned the Warren Van Allen farm, after Hiram Schell). About 1890 Child's Business Directory described him as a farmer with 98 acres of land ("owns farm subject to life lease of his father, Jacob") and 10 cows. Warren’s obituary, as transcribed by Lorena (Van Allen) Wolcott from a record found in Lucia Davidson’s papers, follows:
“Theresa, N.Y., March 19, 1908 — After an illness of only one day or two the death of Warren Van Allen occurred unexpectedly at 12 Sunday night at the home of William Irving in this village where he was visiting. Mr. Van Allen, who has been residing in Carthage a short time, was spending a few days in LeRay among relatives and friends.
He came to this village on Thurs. to visit his sister, Mrs. Wm. Irving [Polly], and on Fri. suffered an attack of Asthma from which he was relieved. Another attack on Sunday complicated with a weak heart brought the end.

In failing health for more than a year, Charles died 1 November 1899 (also seen: 31 Oct 1899) at 1:30 AM, age 34, from lung disease (after his 5th wedding anniversary). Funeral at the Theresa, Jefferson County, New York Presbyterian Church. Interred in Oakwood Cemetery, Theresa. Educated in the county’s common schools, as well as at Ives Seminary in Antwerp, New York. Graduated from Albany Law School in 1894/93 and joined his brother, Willard, in his Carthage, New York law office. However, in 1894 he settled at Theresa, New York, where he opened his own law office. Married Lotta “Lulu” Garrett (b. 1869, d. 1927) of Carthage on 31 October 1894 and had the following daughter:

Was a school teacher who, at one time, taught in what is referred to as the Pink Schoolhouse, a landmark situated south of Theresa. She also taught school in Wilna Township, Jefferson County, New York before marriage to Lawson/Warren Morrissette, when she moved to Richmond, Virginia. Mary was also a church organist for 40 years. Mary and Warren later moved to Warrenton, North Carolina. Mary and Warren had the following children: (order uncertain)

f. Jacob B. “Jake” Van Allen: Born 19 July 1873. Died 5 November 1942 (age 69) at Theresa Hospital from complications of heart and asthma ailments; interred Evans Mills Cemetery, Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York. For 32 years and 5 months was beloved as a mail carrier on Rural Route 1 out of Evans Mills, LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York, retiring in August 1938.
Note: According to his son, Harold, Jacob was not given a middle name by
his parents, but because everyone else had one, he officially and unofficially
referred to himself as Jacob B. Van Allen.

Born 12 August 1876 in the Pink Schoolhouse District of LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York. Resided at 100 Chapin Parkway, Buffalo, New York. Died 28 July 1958 (age 81) in Buffalo General Hospital, Buffalo, Erie County, New York. Memorial service at Holmes Chapel West Minister Presbyterian Church.
Graduated from Theresa High School and Hamilton College, where he was an outstanding athlete, setting school outdoor track records in 1901 in both the 100 yard dash (10.2 seconds) and the 220 yard sprint (23 seconds). After graduating from Albany Law School in 1904 and being admitted to the New York State Bar, John moved to Buffalo New York, where he lived and practiced law for the remainder of his active life. In 1908, after 4 years as a law clerk in Buffalo, John joined Ansley Wilcox in forming the law firm of Wilcox and Van Allen in the Liberty Bank building there. He was probably best known for his public service relating to construction and oversight of the so-called Peace Bridge linking Niagara Falls, New York with Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, which opened in 1927. For that he was known as: “Mr. Peace Bridge.”
John married Gertrude Sweet on 14 February 1907 and had the following children:

1. Biographical notes:
Born 18 December 1883 in the Pink Schoolhouse District of LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York. Died Thursday, 2 November 1972, age 88, at the House of the Good Samaritan Hospital, Watertown, New York. Resided at Evans Mills. Funeral at the Evans Mills United Methodist Church with Reverend Charles Blankenship officiating. Interred in the Omar (near La Fargeville, Alexandria Twp., Jefferson Co., N.Y.) Cemetery along with a number of his wife’s family.
As a youth Howard worked on State Roads, firing a steam roller. At 17 (1900) he was a single farm hand working for John and Ida Busler, and following 1900 his parents lived with him. After the death of both parents (mother in 1905; father in 1908), Howard married (1909) and lived and worked on the Miller farm (Moon Lake, near Theresa). Starting in 1910 he worked the Hiram and Sarah Tim farm on halfs. In 1917 Howard and Jesse bought and operated the Ed and Alma Hawn farm, and he supplemented income by doing odd jobs.
1900 US Census: Howard, age 17 (b. N.Y. State in Mar 1883, parents b.
NYS), was single and living in the household of John Busler in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County, New York. He was employed there as a farm laborer. Of interest, Howard’s cousin, Peter Van Allen
(Para. d.(3. of generation 5, above), age 24 (b. Jul 1875), was living at the
same residence number, but in the household of Clinton Busler, where he was
also employed as a farm laborer.

Prior to death resided with Mrs. Gordon Woodard at 307 Waltham Street, Evans Mills, New York.

Died Friday, 28 January 2000 at the Manchester Manor nursing home, Manchester, Connecticut; interred Buckland Cemetery, Manchester. Graduated from the district grammar school near her home and Theresa High School, Theresa, Jefferson County, New York (because, before there were school buses to transport the students, the parents could decide, since the Van Allen farm as near the line between the Evans Mills and Theresa high school jurisdictions). For a while after high school Lorena worked for Dr. George P. Coopernail in Bedford, New York (who, incidentally, removed her sister, Lucina’s tonsils). She was working as a property clerk/bookkeeper at Pine Camp (later Fort Drum) in Jefferson County, New York (a position she held for 3 years) when she met Stuart Randolph Wolcott (b. 1 Jan 1915 at Manchester, CT), son of John Snyder Wolcott (b. 8 Feb 1886) and his 2nd wife, Inez Evelyn Richardson (b. 31 Sep 1884) of Manchester, Connecticut. Stuart was a member of the US Army’s 45th Division, 157th Infantry stationed at Pine Camp. He had served 30/28 months overseas in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe during World War II, earning during that time 6 battle stars, the Bronze Star, and the Combat Infantry Badge. Stuart was discharged from the Army on 5 October 1945.
Lorena and Stuart announced their engagement on 28 March 1946 and were married on 21 April (Easter Sunday) the same year at the Perch Lake-area home of Howard Van Allen. Reverend Walter Suits of Philadelphia performed the double ring ceremony. Lucina (Van Allen) Kenfield was Bridesmaid. Lucina’s (1st) husband, Gordon Kenfield, was Best Man.
Lorena and Stuart first resided at 180 Main Street, Manchester, Connecticut 06040. They eventually moved to 174 Main Street in Manchester. Stuart was employed as a draftsman in the engineering department of Billings, Spencer & Company in Hartford, Connecticut. They had no children.
b. Almon Kelsey Van Allen: (photos) (more info) Born 19 August 1914 in Pamelia Township, Jefferson County New York. In failing health for 18 years, Almon died Wednesday, 13 May 1987 at the House of the Good Samaritan Hospital, Watertown, New York, where he has been a patient with complications of Alzheimer’s Disease since 9 April 1987. Funeral services were held at Frederick Brothers Funeral Home, Theresa, with Reverend Frances Grauman, Rector of the Episcopal Church of Evans Mills, officiating. Almon was interred in Oakwood Cemetery, Theresa Township, Jefferson County, New York. He married Helen Duffany (photos) (b. 1920) of Orleans Four Corners, Jefferson County, New York on 15 November 1939 at the Lutheran parsonage in Redwood, New York. Attended local schools and, for a while, worked for Timmerman Turkey Farms, but eventually took up farming. In October 1959 Almon and Helen purchased and operated a farm on Dutch Settlement Road (outside Evans Mills) in LeRay Township, Jefferson County, New York. Progressively deteriorating health forced his retirement from farming in 1972. He was a member of the Pamelia Grange. Almon and Helen had the following children:
