Of interest, William Watkins vouched for his father-in-law, Samuel
Covey on his petition for a pension for Samuel's military service.
2. Wife: Martha Ellen (Covey) Barringer
Born 1799 in Patrick County, Virginia; perhaps daughter of Samuel P. and Elizabeth (Knapp)
Covey.
Died after 1850 in Fannin County, Texas, probably after 1860. Married (1st) Daniel Barringer (d. abt 1815
from injuries received in the War of 1812), son of Adam Barringer of Montgomery
County, Virginia, on 23 February 1808 in Patrick County, Virginia and had the
following daughter:
a. Katherine Barringer: Married Jonathan Routh, Sr.
Martha (Covey) Barringer married (2nd) William Watkins on 12 February
1816 in Jefferson County, Tennessee.
Following William's death, Martha (Covey)(Barringer) Watkins moved to
Texas with her daughter, Katherine's family.
Of interest, Martha's brother, Joseph Covey perhaps married Rosanna
Barringer, sister of Daniel Barringer, and all moved to Tennessee.

1. Biographical notes:
Born 24 December 1818 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Died 3 September 1865/66 (cemetery record
says 8 Sep 1866) at Orangeville, Trenton Township, Fannin County, Texas;
interred Porter Cemetery, about 15 miles SW of Bonham, Texas (note: foot marker
at gravesite is engraved "J. H. W."
Described as tall, dark hair, brown eyes, but was sickly. Veteran of the American Civil War, serving in
the Texas's border patrol. He and his
family were pioneers of Texas, moving to Fannin County in November 1849. In the early years had some anxious moments
with Indian raids, but were never attacked.
When he moved to Texas, Joseph acquired cattle and sheep, and resided in
the open with his family until he could build a log home on his homestead.
Joseph's children received their formal education in a log school
house, with benches made from halved logs, and drinking water from a large
bucket and gourd dipper. Eventually the
children attended a less rustic school house at Devoy, Texas.
1850 US Census: Jos C. Watkins, age 31 (b. TN), was
heading a household in Fannin County, Texas.
The household also included his wife, Nancy J. Watkins, age 25 (b. TN);
son, M. R. Watkins, age 3 (b. TX); and son, L. C. Watkins, age 1 (b. TX).
1860 US Census: Joseph Watkins, age 41 (b. TN), was
heading a household in Fannin County, Texas.
The household also included his wife, Jane Watkins, age 35 (b. TN); son,
Adam Watkins, age 8 (b. TX); and daughter, Mary J. Watkins, age 2 months (b.
TX).

Township, Fannin County, Texas; interred there in Burns Cemetery, Route 2,
Trenton. Described as very quick,
clever, and witty. Of interest, Nancy's
brother, James C. McFarland, resided with Nancy and her husband, Joseph
Watkins, until he married Joseph's sister, Ruth Watkins (see above).
Nancy McFarland married (1st) Joseph Covey Watkins and, subsequently,
moved to Texas. Widow
Nancy (McFarland) Watkins married (2nd), Benjamin "Ben" Richard
Sanders (b. 22 Jul 1823 in TN, d. 26 Jan 1897 in TX), widowed father of Nancy's
daughter-in-law, Anne Parilee (Sanders) Watkins, on 8/9
November 1869 in Fannin County, Texas.
Benjamin R. Sanders had married (1st) Eliza Jane
Frazier and had children, including, as just stated, a daughter, Parilee,
who married Nancy's son, Adam (see gen 4, below).
1870 US Census: Ben R. Sanders, age 47 (b. TN) and
employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Fannin County, Texas. His real estate was valued at $1,500, and his
personal property was valued at $1,400.
The household also included his wife, Nancy J. Sanders, age 45 (b. TN);
daughter, Elizabeth E. Sanders, age 22 (b. TN); son, Reuben Sanders, age 20 (b.
TN); daughter, Annie P. Sanders, age 18 (b. TN); son, William Sanders, age 16

Adam), Claude Watkins, that when Mack died, Claude was renamed Mack Claude
Watkins.
Per Frances Lee (Kennedy) Biles): "When my
grandfather [Mack Claude Watkins] was born [in Sep, 1879], this young man spent
more of his time carrying him [my grandfather] around, so when he [Joseph]
died, they tacked 'Mack' on the front of his [my grandfather's] name."

Trenton Township, Fannin County, Texas.
Described as 5' 8" to 10" tall, very slender, with dark brown
eyes and black hair. Employed as a
farmer for many years.

b. TN) and employed as a farmer, was heading a household in Precinct 3, Fannin
County, Texas. The household also included

(named for William Boyd and Margaret Jane (Squires) Burns, who donated the land). Described as having blond hair and blue eyes,
like his mother. Had a stroke Wednesday
morning, 4 November 1964. Took oath of
office for Deputy Sheriff, Fannin County, Texas on 30 November 1914 (filed 4
Dec 1914; recorded 7 Dec 1914).

Born 28 August 1880 near Trenton, Trenton Township, Fannin County,
Texas; only child of William
Weakley and Sarah Ella
Frances (Andress/Andrews) Chadwell. Died there 2 September 1943/44, age 63 years
