5   Lieutenant James Wells

 

1.  Biographical notes:

 

Born 13 September 1728 in Wethersfield Township, Hartford County, Connecticut (also seen: b. 1732 in Colchester Twp, New London Co., CT).  Died 3 July 1778 in a battle in the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania.  Was 6’ 7” tall.  In 1771 moved to Wyoming County, Pennsylvania with his wife and 9 children, where he was employed by the Susquehanna Company to survey township boundary lines.  In 1774 moved from there to Wyalusing Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Returned to the Wyoming Valley in 1776 because the threat from Indians was increasing.  That same year James enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant in the First Independent Company of Wyoming under the command of Captain Robert Durkee and participated in the Revolutionary War.  Early in 1778, while with Washington’s Army in New Jersey, James learned of threatening conditions in the Wyoming Valley and, with Lieutenant Perrin Ross, took a leave of absence in late June to return to that region.  Both died in the battle that occurred on 3 July 1778.  Tradition says James was wounded in the leg, but was able to hold off the Indians until he was tomahawked.

 

2.  Wife: Hannah Loomis

 

Born 15 July 1732 (also seen: b. abt 1725) in Wethersfield Township, Hartford County, Connecticut; daughter of Daniel and Hannah (Withrell) Loomis.  Died 1795, age 70, in Wyalusing Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Of Colchester, Connecticut.  Married Lieutenant James Wells on 28 March 1754 in Colchester Township, New London County, Connecticut.  Following his death, Hannah and her 10 children fled back to Connecticut with other friends.  Returned to Wyalusing Township, Pennsylvania in 1787.

a. James Wells, Jr.: Born 1755 in Colchester Township, New London County, Connecticut.  Settled at Honeoye Falls, New York.  In 1776 enlisted in the 1st Independent Company of Wyoming, Pennsylvania.

 

b. Olive Wells: Born 21 March 1756 in Colchester Township, New London County, Connecticut (also seen: b. 1762).

 

c. Betsey Wells: Born 7 May 1758 in Colchester Township, New London County, Connecticut (also seen: b. 1760).

 

d. Hannah Wells: Born 17 January 1762 in Colchester Township, New London County, Connecticut (also seen: b. 1757).

 

e. Reuben Wells: Born 8 April 1764 in Colchester Township, New London County, Connecticut (also seen: b. 1768).  Married Abigail Turrell and resided on Wyalusing Creek, Wyalusing Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Later moved to Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.

 

f. Amasa Wells: Born 26 July 1765 in Colchester Township, New London County, Connecticut.  Died 28 July 1863 in Le Raysville Borough, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Settled at Camptown, Bradford County, Pennsylania.  Later moved to Pike Township, Bradford County.  Married Sarah Lewis (b. 1 Mar 1769 in New Milford Twp, CT, d. 18 Oct 1823) (also seen: m. Tamer (?)), daughter of Thomas and Mary (Turrell) Lewis, on 17 January 1787 in Colchester Township, New London County, Connecticut and had the following children:

 

(1. Loomis Wells: Born 12 April 1789 at Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut.

 

(2. Cyrus Wells: Born July 1790 at Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut.
