12 William White: (more
info)
Mayflower Passenger
1. Biographical notes:
Nothing known of William White before 15 August 1620. On that date he, along with his family and two servants (William Holbeck and Edward Thompson) sailed from Southampton, England (by way of Plymouth, England) to North America aboard the sailing ship Mayflower. They arrived initially at Cape Cod Harbor, where on 11 November 1620 (Julian calendar/old calendar) William was the 11th of 41 signers of the Mayflower Compact. Two or three weeks later, while still at Cape Cod, William's son, Peregrine was born aboard ship, making Peregrine the first English birth in Plymouth Colony. The Mayflower arrived at Plymouth Harbor on 26 December and some passengers went ashore on 28 December 1620. According to Governor Bradford's list of the Mayflower Passengers:
"The names of
those which came over first, in ye year 1620 and were (by the blessing of God)the first beginners, and (in a sort) the foundation, of all
the plantations, and colonies, in New England:...Mr. William White, and Susana
his wife; and one son called Resolved, and one borne a ship-board called Perigriene; and two servants named William Holbeck and Edward Thomson."
William White died during the "first sickness" at Plymouth, New England on 21 February 1621. Probate records do not exist. His two servants and several other Mayflower passengers also died during and shortly after the passage from England - life was very hard and their strength was, obviously, depleted by the journey and rigors of the winter environment. In 1651 (about 30 years later) Governor Bradford wrote: "Mr. White and his two servants died soon after their landing. His wife married with Mr. Winslow.... His sons are married and Resolved hath 5 children, Peregrine two, all living. So their increase are seven."
2. Wife: Susanna (?)
Nothing known of her before the voyage to America. Widowed while still young, Susanna married for a second time on 12 May 1621 (making her the first bride in Plymouth Colony) to Edward Winslow (more info) (b.1595 in England, d. 1655 in Barbados), son of Edward and Magdalene (Oliver) Winslow. Edward had also been a passenger on the Mayflower and had lost his wife just 6 weeks before his marriage to Susanna.
Of interest in this regard, in 1623 Edward Winslow wrote a letter to an "Uncle Robert Jackson" in England in which he relayed news of Susanna, her late husband, and her children.
In 1638 the Winslows moved to Green Harbor, later called Marshfield. Edward rose in prominence to eventually become Governor of the Plymouth Colony and representative to England. There is no evidence Susanna accompanied him on any of his several trips to and from England in that and other public capacities. In fact, a bill of sale dated 12/11/1647 for the services of an Indian man for a period of 10 years mentions her by name: "Susanna Winslow, wife of Mr. Edward Winslow of Marshfield and his agent in this time of his absence in England." Edward spent the last 6 years of his life in London, England, leaving his land in North America to his son, Josiah, "he allowing to my wife a full third parte thereof for her life also." Clearly Susanna was not living in London. Edward Winslow's will, dated 18 December 1654, refers to him as a resident of London.
Susanna and Edward Winslow had at least five children of their own (a child d. young; Edward; John; Josiah (more info); Elizabeth). She must have died after 18 Dec 1654 and sometime before 2 July 1675 when her son, Josiah Winslow, did not mention her in his will. Oddly, there is no town, church, court, or press record of the death of this wife of a colony governor, mother of another colony governor, and first bride in Plymouth Colony.
3. Children:
a. Resolved White: See generation 11, below.
b. Peregrine White:
Born aboard the Mayflower at Cape Cod
Harbor (now Provincetown) before the end of November 1620.
That made him the first English birth in the Plymouth Colony. He was so named in honor of the pilgrimage
then in progress. Peregrine moved to
Marshfield after 1632 with his mother and stepfather (Edward Winslow) and
resided there all his life, except for a brief period around 1656 when a deed
from his father-in-law places him in Scituate.
He married Sarah Bassett (d. at Marshfield on 22 Jan/20 Jul 1711), daughter
of William and Elizabeth (?) Bassett, approximately 1647.
On 7 June 1636 (approx 16 years old) Peregrine volunteered to join those of Massachusetts and Connecticut who were fighting the Pequot Indians. By 1642 he had achieved the rank of "ancient bearer" (or Ensign) of the trained militia when forces were being raised to protect the colonists against the Indians of the Narragansett tribe. That's why, in a February 1664 Plymouth Colony Court action, he was referred to as "Leiftenant Perigrine White."
When the patent for Plymouth Colony was surrendered to the "Body of Freemen," three tracts of land were reserved for the "Purchasers, or Old Comers." In honor of being the first Caucasian born in New England, the Plymouth Colony Court granted Perigrine 200 acres of that land "lying and being at the path that goes from Bridgewater to the bay adjoining to the bay line."
On 22 May 1698 (77/8 years old) Peregrine was admitted to the Marshfield Church as "Captain Perigrine White." Perigrine died 22 July 1704, aged 83 years and 8 months. His will, dated 14 July 1704 and proved 14 August 1704, is owned by and displayed at Pilgrim Hall in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Peregrine and Sarah had the following children:

11 Resolved White: (more info)
Mayflower Passenger
Born approximately 1615 in Leyden, Holland (or perhaps England). Traveled to America aboard the "Mayflower" along with his parents in 1620. Moved to Green Harbor (Marshfield) in 1638 with his mother and stepfather.
On 3 August 1640 Resolved White was granted 100 acres in Scituate next to William Vassal's land. He married at Scituate 5 November 1640 and resided there during the period when his children were born (1640-1656). Resolved was granted additional land in Scituate on 7 March 1642/43.
Resolved travelled to St. Michael's, Barbados with his wife, Judith, and children in 1656/7, presumably to aid in settling the estate of her father. In that regard, on 17 March 1656/57 he sold to Nicholas Ware, a merchant of St. Michael's, a portion of William Vassal's plantation.
On 1 June 1658 Resolved was made a Freeman of Plymouth Colony. He returned to Marshfield in 1662 and was there in 1670 when Judith died. On 4 July 1674 Resolved deposed that he was about 59 years old. He was in Salem from 1674-1682 at least, being a Freeman of Salem on 19 May 1680. Served in King Philip's War (French and Indian War) under Captain Manning in 1676. Returned to Marshfield after the death of his second wife, Abigail, and is assumed to have died in Salem after 19 September 1687. No record of death or probate.

Born in England approximately 1619. Daughter of William and Ann (King/Kinge) Vassall of Barbados. Married at Scituate, New Plymouth, New England on 5 November/8 April 1640. Joined the church in Scituate on 14 May 1637. The will of William Vassal, Esq. of Barbados, dated 31 July 1655, names his daughter Judith White, wife of Resolved White. Judith was interred at Marshfield on 3 April 1670.
2. Children:
a. William White:
Born 10/18 April 1642 at Scituate, Plymouth Colony. Died at Marshfield 24 January 1695, apparently never married. Was living in Marshfield with Josiah Winslow's family on 2 July 1675. On 13 March 1684/5 William's brothers, Samuel and Josiah, and their father, Resolved, provided for his care by quit-claiming an island in Marshfield to John Branch, tenant of William White, "eldest son of Resolved." In return, Branch would "maintain the said William White...in sickness and in health during the term of his natural life." From this it appears William was mentally and/or physically incompetent. On 19 September 1687 William signed a quitclaim of his rights in the island to Branch, acknowledging the act on the same day. There were no probate records for William in Plymouth Colony.
b. John White:
Born 11 March 1644 at Scituate, Plymouth Colony. According to Governor Bradford, John was living in 1650. May have died young or gone to live in Barbados with his mother's siblings.
