Origin of
the surname “Wolcott:”
Ancient
Wolcott Coat of Arms:
|
Shield: Argent a Cheveron between three
Chess Rooks ermined. (the chess rooks were introduced early in the 15th
century by a Wolcott knight who, according to family records, was “Playing at
ye chesse with Henry ye fifte, kind of Englande, he gave hym ye cheke matte
with ye rouke, whereupone ye kings changed his coate of armes which was ye
crosse with flower de lures, and gave him ye rouke for a remembrance.”)
Crest: A Bull’s Head erased argent, armed
or, ducally gorged, lined, and ringed, of the last.
Motto: Nullius addictus jurare in verba
magistri (from Latin poet Horace, which means, literally, “Accustomed to swear
in the words of no master.” Referring to
how a student might repeat information provided by a teacher, it means Wolcotts
take nothing purely on trust, but rather, think and decide for themselves. Somewhat similar to President Ronald Reagan’s
often used motto during the Cold War: “Trust, but verify!”
