1 Earl Denver Young: (photos) (more info)
Born 28 January 1898 at
Roulette, Potter County, Pennsylvania. Died
9 November 1984; interred Oakwood Cemetery, Mansfield, Tioga County,
Pennsylvania. As a young man in the
early 1900s Earl had the opportunity to either apprentice as a glass blower or
as a mold maker, both in the glass industry.
The blower would form glass bottles, etc. into molds and be paid by the
number done successfully. Earl chose
glass blowering and was initially employed in glass factories around Roulette,
Potter County, Pennsylvania. Eventually
automation replaced manual glass blowers, so Earl began travelling to places
that had not yet automated, but in time there was no work for him, so he
started working on construction jobs as a mechanic and, ultimately, as a
welder. In that capacity Earl worked on
a number of road projects between Milan and E. Smithfield, Pennsylvania,
becoming quite proficient as a welder and heavy equipment mechanic. At some point he started working for the
Johnson Trucking Company, which provided dump trucks and other heavy equipment
to road construction projects. In the
late 1920s Johnson Trucking transitioned into hauling milk in stainless steel
tank trucks and building aluminum tanks, and Earl became well-known for being a
skilled welder of both difficult metals.
