1920 US Census: George Zobel,
age 32 (b. Hungary, parents b. Hungary) and employed as a machine operator in
the air brake industry, was heading a household at 14 Hower
Street in the City of Watertown, Jefferson County, New York. He had immigrated to the US in 1912 and was
still an alien. The household also
included his wife, Mary Zobel, age 30 (b. Hungary;
parents b. Hungary), who immigrated to the US in 1913 and was still an alien.
1930 US Census: George Zobel, age 43 (b. Romania
(Austria was crossed out); parents b. Austria Romania) and employed as a nickel
plater in a brass factory, was heading a household at
614 Water Street in the City of Watertown, Jefferson County, New York. He immigrated to the US in 1923 (still an
alien), married 1st at age 22, and his residence was
valued at $3,000. The household also
included his wife, Mary Zobel, age 41 (b. Romania (Austria was crossed out);
parents b. Austria Romania), who immigrated to the US in 1923 (still an alien)
and married 1st at age 20; and nephew, Michael Horith,
age 17 (b. NYS), single, and employed as a messenger boy in the telegram
industry.
1940 US Census: George Zobel, age 53 (b. Austria
Hungary) and employed as a nickel plater in a
machinery plant, was heading a household at 614 Water Street in the City of
Watertown, Jefferson County, New York.
He had completed 8th grade, and his residence was valued at $2,000. The household also included his wife, Mary
Zobel, age 51 (b. Austria Hungary) and employed in a machinery plant, who had
completed 8th grade; lodger, John
Zobel, age 21 (b. NYS), single, and
employed as a core maker for an air brake company, who had completed 8th grade;
and lodger, Martin Horeth, age 21 (b. NYS), single,
and employed as a core maker for an air brake company, who had completed 8th
grade. George and Mary resided in the
same house on 1 April 1935, and John and Martin resided elsewhere in Watertown.
At age 24 George Zobel married Maria
"Mary" Horeth (photos) (b. 9 Jun 1889 in Austria-Hungary, d. 22 Jun
1967), age 22, daughter of George and Mary (Emerick) Horeth, on 7 January 1912 in Jefferson County, New
York. Maria immigrated to the US in
1923. No children.

1. Biographical notes:
Born 21 September 1884 in Romania
(then Austria-Hungary). Died . Martin grew up as a sheep farmer and aspired
to continue in that line of work. To
accumulated wealth toward that end, perhaps about 1912 he (and perhaps his
brother, George) temporarily emigrated from Romania to Watertown, Jefferson
County, New York, where Martin worked for the New York Air Brake
Corporation. He married while in New
York, and about 1922 he returned to Romania with his new family. At some point disease devastated his flock of
sheep.
At age 68, while stateless, sailed
in tourist class aboard the SS America, departing Bremerhaven, Germany on 20 April
1953 and arriving at New York City on 28 April 1953 with destination 776 Landsing Street, Watertown, Jefferson County, New York. He was
accompanied by his wife, Katharina Zobel, age 55 and also stateless.
1918 WWI Draft Registration: Martin Zobel, age 33
(b. 21 Sep 1884 in Austria-Hungary), an alien, and employed as a machine
operator for the New York Air Brake Corporation, resided with his wife, Katrina
Zobel, at 417 East Moulton Street, Watertown,
Jefferson County, New York.

same address, on 16 January 1915 (license issued 13 Jan 1915) at Watertown,
Jefferson County, New York, witnessed by Martin Schneider.

1. Biographical notes:
Born 1 June 1919 at Watertown,
Jefferson County, New York. Died 6 February 2010, age 91, in Genesee
Township, Allegany County, New York. At age
3 (abt 1922) accompanied his parents to Romania; returned to the US at age 18
(abt 1937). As a US citizen by birth,
John sponsored the subsequent immigration of several of his Romanian-born
siblings to the US. Resided
for many years at 776 Lansing Street, Watertown, Jefferson County, New York. Veteran of World War II in
Europe; served in the US Army.
Later in life resided in a nursing home in Watertown. In March 2009 moved to the VA hospital in Batavia,
Steuben County, New York.
The Lutheran Minister who officiated at John's
funeral related an anecdote John told him about an experience he had during the
War. John was walking across a field in
Europe when he heard a voice behind him yell: "Sarg!" He stopped, turned around, but no one was
there. Before proceeding again, John
noticed he was about to step on a land mine.
That incident convinced John that he had been saved by divine
intervention.

headed by his uncle, George Zobel, age 53 (b. Austria Hungary) and employed as
a nickel plater in a machinery plant, at 614 Water

married John Zobel of Watertown, Jefferson County, New York on 11 April 1945/46
in Concordia Lutheran Church, Watertown.

age 42 (b. Austria-Romania; parents b. Austria-Romania), divorced, and employed
as a laborer in a foundry, resided as a boarder in the household headed by Zebara Habalau, age 38 (b.
Austria-Romania), at 666 Grant Street in the City of Watertown, Jefferson County,
New York. He married 1st at age 21.
1940 US Census: John Bachner,
age 43 (b. Austria-Hungary) and employed as a maulder
[molder] for an Air Brake Company, was heading a household at 408 Davis Street
in the City of Watertown, Jefferson County, New York. He had completed 8th grade. The household also included his wife, Mary
[(Schatz)(Schneider)] Bachner, age 38 (b.
Austria-Hungary), who had completed 8th grade; step-daughter, Marie Schnieder, age 17 (b. Austria-Hungary) and single, who had
completed 4 years of high school, with no occupation recorded; daughter, Rose Bachner, age 12 (b. NYS); daughter, Helen Bachner, age 10 (b. NYS); daughter, Elizabeth Bachner, age 8 (b. NYS); and son, John Bachner,
age 5 (b. NYS). Of interest, the
household headed by Michael Schatz, age 66, was enumerated on the same census
page. On 1 April 1935 they resided in
the same city.
